Abstract:   (1004 Views)
Introduction: Celiac is a chronic systemic disease with dangerous complications such as malignancy, osteoporosis and hematologic problems. The diagnostic gold standard is duodenum biopsy, but this method is an invasive method with complications. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the results of duodenum biopsy in suspected celiac patients to justify whether or not to perform this procedure.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study of patients underwent upper endoscopy and duodenal biopsy with suspected symptoms of celiac disease and iron deficiency anemia who visited Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Kashan between 2016 and 2020. The pathology classification criterion was the Marsh scoring classification. The required information was completed by the researcher in the checklist and then entered into SPSS Ver.26 software for statistical analysis.
Results: In this study, the files of 350 patients (211 women; average age 36.60±18.12 years) were examined. Nine point three percent of the biopsy results were related to Marsh 3. The distribution of biopsy results was not significantly related to the gender and age of the patients (p>0.05).
Discussion and Conclusion: In patients with symptoms suspected of celiac disease or iron deficiency anemia, the prevalence of celiac disease is very high, with a ratio of 1:9. Therefore, duodenal biopsy is recommended in all these patients.
