Objective: Regards to the increasing rate of infertility and the growth of the use of Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART), it is necessary to recognize and investigate the psychological differences between Naturally Conceived (NC) and ART pregnant women in order to enhance women’s mental health during pregnancy. In this regard, this research sought to compare the basic psychological needs between NC and ART pregnant women
Method: This research is an applied case-control study with quantitative data. The case group was ART and the control group was NC. Each group contains 100 participants who were selected from pregnant women in the Sarem hospital (Tehran, Iran) using available sampling method. The participants answered the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scales.
Results: The result of the t-test confirmed that there was a significant difference between basic psychological needs in NC and ART pregnant women and these needs were less satisfied in ART. It means that the needs of Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness were less satisfied in ART.
Conclusion: Practitioners who are involved in pregnant women's health, especially infertility treatment centers, should be aware of the psychological needs of ART pregnant women so that they can identify women at risk and refer them to specialized levels to receive care services and psychological interventions.
It seems that ART pregnant women have different psychological needs so it is necessary for infertility treatment centers to identify women at risk in time by examining these needs and refer them to specialists to receive care services and psychological interventions.
