Introduction: The most common cause of death in pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy is ectopic pregnancy. Considering the importance of the issue, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the five-year statistics of patients with ectopic pregnancy treated with methotrexate in the maternity ward and operating room of the Sarem Women's Hospital (Tehran, Iran).
Material and methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study. The method was to collect and review the necessary information from archived patients' medical records referred to Sarem Women's Hospital over a five-year period from November 2011 to November 2015, when their ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed and used for methotrexate treatment. Data were analyzed by SPSS software, version 19.
Results: In this research, the total number of patients was 126 and their average age was 32 years. In the history of drug use, most used drugs related to infertility treatment (7.2%), and the most common history of surgery (37.2%) among referring women was related to surgery for ovarian cysts, cesarean section, and appendectomy. 86.5% of cases had no history of infertility. Out of all the patients, only 21 people (16.7%) were successfully treated with methotrexate and in other cases, it led to surgery. The most common surgery after methotrexate was laparoscopic salpingostomy (54%).
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, different risk factors have an impact on ectopic pregnancy. The history of infertility and history of abdominal surgery can be one of the most effective factors in ectopic pregnancy.
