The clinical experience of complex pregnancies infected with other coronaviruses, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), has made pregnant women potentially vulnerable to severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. Physiological changes during pregnancy have a significant effect on the immune system, respiratory system and cardiovascular function and coagulation. These changes may have positive or negative effects on the progression of COVID-19. The effect of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnancy is not yet known, and coordinated and comprehensive studies around the world are needed to determine the effects on implantation, fetal development, delivery, and neonatal health. In addition to the direct effects of the disease, a number of indirect consequences of the pandemic, such as reduced access to reproductive health services, increased mental health pressures, and increased social exclusion may affect maternal health.
