Background and Purpose: Conflict resolution skills are one of the key indicators of successful relationships, and people who have constructive conflict resolution skills increase the duration of their relationship. There is a great relationship between satisfaction with a marital relationship and its stability while the non-constructive conflict resolution style gradually causes frustration and burnout in couples and increases the possibility of divorce. In recent years, several approaches to solving marital conflicts have been introduced by psychologists. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of emotion-oriented couple therapy on marital intimacy and resolving conflicts between couples.
Material & Methods: The present research was a semi-experimental method of pre and post-test types without a control group. The statistical population included young couples who came to solve their marital disputes. The sample size of the study was 30 couples who went through the therapy sessions completely. The participants read and signed the written consent before entering the study. After entering the study, the couples were randomly distributed into four groups of 14 people. After entering the study, the couples completed questionnaires on personal characteristics, the intimacy of Walker and Thomson, and marital conflicts. In the experimental group, 10 sessions of 120 minutes were held with a sequence of one session every week, and at the end, intimacy and marital conflict questionnaires were completed again. Treatment effects before and after the intervention were analyzed using the dependent t-test or non-parametric Wilcoxon test.
Results: In this study, 30 couples were examined, 10 of whom (33.3%) had a bachelor's degree and their average age was 32.4 years. The average score of marital conflict before and after the intervention was 158 and 77, respectively. Also, in terms of intimacy score, the average score before the intervention was 37.9, which reached 93.3 after the intervention. Statistically, the decrease in the mean scores in all subscales of marital conflicts and the increase in the intimacy score was significant (P<0.001). The effectiveness of emotion-oriented couple therapy was statistically significant in both sexes and all age groups of couples (P<0.001).
Conclusion:  Emotional therapy sessions, by rebuilding the emotional experience and increasing the secure attachment of each couple, provide a suitable basis for accepting the emotional experiences and attachment needs of the other party, and this approach improves marital relations through communication It becomes healthy and increases marital intimacy, and through resolving marital conflicts, it can reduce emotional and physical fatigue of couples.
